Alderfly larva. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an alderfly larva (Sialis lutaria). At right is one of its compound eyes (yellow) and at lower centre are its powerful jaws. Alderfly larvae are aquatic and feed on other insects, small invertebrates and worms. The larval stage lasts for 1 to 2 years.
