Caption

Cat flea mouth. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mouthparts of a cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis). The long and sharp mandibles (grey) are modified to pierce the skin and suck blood. Most fleas remain on their host only while feeding. Fleas are not as discriminating about their host as their names suggest, and cat fleas will bite dogs, and dog fleas will bite cats. Most flea species also bite humans, given the chance. Magnification: x375 at 6x6cm size.
