Shortfin mako shark. The shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) lives throughout the world's oceans in temperate and tropical areas. They prefer cooler water, and tend to swim deep below the surface in tropical regions, up to 400 metres down. They are amongst the fastest fish in the world, and are able to reach speeds of over 60 kilometres per hour. They mainly eat other fish, rarely taking mammals. They are amongst the most popular game fish due to their strength and speed, and may leap several metres out of the water when on a line. Photographed off California, USA.
