Caption

Red bellied pacu (Colossoma macropomum). This solitary fish also known as a tambaqui is distributed throughout the Amazonian and Orinoco basins. It is breed commercially (pisciculture) throughout South America. Adults stay in flooded forests during the first five months of the rainy season, consuming fruits and grains that have been washed up in the waters. The rest of the year they feed on zooplankton, insects and decaying plants.
