European pilchard shoal. The European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus) is also known as the sardine. It feeds mainly on crustaceans and grows up to a length of 25 centimetres. It is a popular food fish, although overfishing has depleted the populations in the North Atlantic. Photographed in the Mediterranean Sea.
