Northern puffer (Sphoeroides maculatus) resting on the seabed. This fish inhabits coastal waters in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Canada to northern Florida, USA. It feeds mainly on shellfish, and can reach a maximum length of around 36 centimetres. When threatened, however, it rapidly gulps in water, and expands to become roughly spherical. This dramatic increase in size deters predators.
