Trout eggs. Close-up of several eggs of the rainbow trout, or steelhead salmon (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The black dots are the eyes of the developing embryos. This fish was originally from the eastern Pacific region, but has been introduced to cool and temperate waters throughout the world. It can live in both sea and fresh water, and the marine populations swim up rivers to breed. Adults are valued as a food fish, and rainbow trout have been farmed in many places. An adult may reach over a metre in length. The rainbow trout has a wide diet that includes insects, crustaceans and other fish.
