Red mullet (Mullus surmuletus). This fish inhabits the seabed of the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean and the North Sea. It feeds on crustaceans and worms, which it finds in the sand using its barbels (centre right). The barbels can be folded back into a groove on the underside of the fish. The red mullet grows to between 20 and 40 centimetres in length. Photographed in the French Mediterranean.
