Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) school. The bluefin tuna is found in temperate and tropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean. It can grow to a length of almost five metres and a weight of over 650 kilograms, although fish that large are rare. Overfishing of bluefin tuna for food has drastically reduced its numbers, and the numbers of very large fish. The fish is farmed in some areas. It is a very fast swimmer, and feeds on smaller fish and squid. Older, larger fish tend to be solitary, with younger fish staying in schools. Photographed off Malta, in the Mediterranean Sea.
