Caption

Mating mandarinfish (Synchiropus picturatus). This fish is also called the picturesque dragonet. It is found in the Indo-West Pacific regions and feeds on small benthic invertebrates. Male mandarinfish perform mating displays to several females at a time in the safety of the coral rubble. When accepted by a female, the pair then rise slowly above the reef to disperse the fertilised eggs into the currents. Photographed off Maratua Island, in the Sulawesi Sea, Indonesia.
