Examples of tadpoles at two different stages of development. The tadpoles on the right are still contained within the spawn. They remain within the jelly-like substance of the egg, feeding on it, until they are sufficiently developed to lead an independent existence. The tadpoles on the left are older by approximately one week. They have escaped the jelly and feed on algae.
