Tadpole metamorphosis. Shoal of tadpoles at different stages of development, swimming among the algae and plant matter on which they feed. The tail has developed in all of these specimens, but only some tadpoles have developed hindlimbs (others reveal limb buds). Tadpoles develop hindlimbs at about two months old. In European frogs, tadpole development lasts two to three months; this time interval is subject to variation depending on the individual species and on water temperature and food supply.
