Golden toads (Bufo periglenes) mating. The golden or Monteverde toad has a restricted range in the Cordillera de Tilaran mountains in northern Costa Rica. This habitat is protected as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. Here, a male toad (orange) is seen in amplexus (mating embrace) with a female (black, yellow and orange blotches). After mating, the female will lay between 200 and 400 eggs in a pool. Golden toads range in size from 40 to 55 centimetres long.
