Common toad (Bufo bufo). Distributed throughout Europe, Asia and North Africa, the common toad is Britain's largest toad; growing to a length of 15 centimetres and living for as much as 40 years. Its preferred habitat is damp areas of deciduous woodland, whilst in breeding season it lives in ponds and slow-moving rivers. Although mainly living on insects and small invertebrates, larger toads can eat harvest mice and grass snakes, which they swallow whole.
