Smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) swimming underwater. This is a mature male during the breeding season. Originally known as Triturus vulgaris, this common newt grows up to 10 centimetres long and is found throughout Europe. From late February to March, the smooth newt emerges from hibernation and heads for fresh water to breed.
