Green turtle. View of a green turtle (Chelonia mydas) on a coral reef. The turtle is surrounded by sea plants and small fish (upper left). The green turtle is a large aquatic reptile which lives in warm seas throughout the world. It stays close to coasts for most of its life, eating the plants which are abundant there. It may reach a length of over 150 centimetres. Despite their entirely aquatic existence, the females still return to beaches to lay their eggs, almost always the beach where they themselves were born. Photographed on the Ningaloo Reef, western Australia.
