Rio Grande cooter (Pseudemys gorzugi), formerly considered a race of the river cooter (Pseudemys concinna), but officially designated a new species in 1984. The species spans from the Rio Grande Basin of Texas and Mexico to the Pecos River in southeast New Mexico and southeast Texas. The long claws on the cooters front feet and its long tail identify this specimen as male.
