Juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). These large reptiles inhabit freshwater swamps, lakes and bays in the south- eastern USA and surrounding islands. The American alligator spends much of the day basking by the banks of rivers and lakes. It hunts by day and night, taking turtles, snakes, fish and mammals. It averages around three metres in length. Photographed at an alligator farm in the Florida Everglades, USA. Alligators are farmed for their hides, which are used to make leather goods, and for their meat.
