American crocodile. Open-mouthed American crocodile (Crocodylus americanus or acutus). The American crocodile is the largest crocodile in the Americas and can grow up to 7 metres long. They have 30-40 large teeth, armour-plated skin and jaw muscles that are strong enough to crush bones. The American crocodile can swim in both fresh water and the open ocean. This has extended its range over a large area from Florida, USA, to southern Mexico. It mainly hunts fish, birds and mammals. This crocodile can use its tail to sweep an animal into the water before eating it. Photographed in Florida.
