Caption

Gecko toe hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hairs, or setae, from a gecko's (family Gekkonidae) toe. These hairs enable the gecko to cling to smooth surfaces by taking advantage of weak intermolecular forces, known as Van der Waals forces.
