Gecko foot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a gecko's (family Gekkonidae) foot. The pads (green) on the foot are covered in hairs, or setae, that enable the gecko to cling to smooth surfaces by taking advantage of weak intermolecular forces, known as Van der Waals forces. Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
