Common lizard (Lacerta vivipara) hunting a cricket (order Orthoptera). This lizard is found in northern and central Europe through to northern Asia. It is found in a variety of habitats, including woodland, marshes, sand dunes and hedgerows. The common lizard preys on insects, spiders, snails and worms, stunning its prey by shaking it, before swallowing it whole. To escape predators it can shed and regrow its tail. The common lizard, which can grow to 18 centimetres in length, hibernates from October to March.
