Savannah monitor lizard (Varanus exanthematicus). This reptile is found throughout most of Africa south of the Sahara. It prefers the grassy plains and open woodlands of the savannah, and is not found in the sandy deserts or rainforests. It eats small mammals, birds, snakes, lizards and eggs, and can reach lengths of up to 1.5 metres. It is a popular pet. Photographed in a terrarium.
