Tunnel effect. Artwork representing the tunnel effect, the passage of a particle through a forbidden region. This effect as many others which are classically unexplained, have found a logical explanation within the quantum mechanics theory. Classically, if a particle moves in one direction with kinetic energy E and approaches a potential barrier with energy U, the particle may tunnel through the barrier only if E is bigger than U. However, even when E is smaller than U, there is a finite probability for the particle to tunnel through the barrier.
