Quantum foam. Computer artwork representing the proposed space topology of quantum foam. Quantum foam is an attempt to describe the form space takes inside a singularity. A singularity is a postulated infinitely dense point at the centre of a black hole. Inside the singularity, the classical laws of physics break down, and give way to the laws of quantum gravity. These forces distort spacetime until time is irrelevant, and space is no longer flat and uniform, but infinitely twisted and joined. As time is not a function, it is impossible to say "when" these forms exist. The structure of the foam is based on probability alone.
