Chimpanzees. Two chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) resting on a branch in a tree. Chimpanzees are great apes which inhabit the forests and forest edges of central and western Africa. Chimpanzees tend to be sociable, with several family groups living together. They are highly communicative, and have a huge repertoire of facial expressions, vocalisations and gestures. It has been shown that chimpanzees' learning abilities are similar to those of young human children. Photographed in the Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
