Chimpanzee. Resting chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) examining a leaf. The chimpanzee is a great ape which inhabits the forests and forest edges of central and western Africa. It sleeps in trees at night, but by day adults spend more of their time on the ground. Chimpanzees tend to be sociable, with several family groups living together. They are omnivorous, eating fruit, leaves, termites, birds, small mammals, bird's eggs and honey. They are highly communicative and have a huge range of facial expressions, vocalisations and gestures. It has been shown that chimpanzees' learning abilities are similar to those of young human children.
