Young chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in cages at a sanctuary. One is screaming as it is picked up by a sanctuary worker. Chimps are endangered mainly due to destruction of their habitat; forested areas in western and central Africa. They are omnivorous primates which feed on fruits, leaves, insects and occasionally small mammals. They have been observed to make and use tools, which is considered a sign of high intelligence.
