Caption

White-handed or common gibbon (Hylobates lar). This small ape lives in tropical rainforests throughout southern China and South East Asia. Rarely descending from the treetops to the forest floor, it lives in family groups in territories encompassing 12-40 hectares. It takes its name from its white hands and feet, although the rest of the coat varies between individuals from black to pale brown. It is extremely agile, moving from branch to branch at speed using its long, strong arms (brachiating). It is predominantly herbivorous, eating flowers, leaves and fresh fruit.
