Young orang-utan. One-year-old orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus). This great ape inhabits the forests of Borneo and Sumatra and is the largest tree- dwelling mammal. Under favourable conditions orang-utans breed every four years, producing a single offspring after an eight month gestation. The orang-utan's diet consists mainly of fruit. It is an endangered species.
