Caption

Lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) lying on grass. Gorillas are the largest of all primates. Males can reach 1.7 metres in height and up to 180 kilograms in weight. Black or greyish hair covers the whole body other than the face, soles of the feet, the hands and the chest. On reaching sexual maturity (at around 11 years of age), adult males acquire a silver-grey colour across the back and upper thighs. The natural habitat of the gorilla is the tropical forests and swamps of western and central Africa.
