Caption

Brown-throated three-toed sloth. Brown-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) hanging from a tree branch. This sloth inhabits the rainforests of Central and northern South America. It feeds almost exclusively on leaves from Cecropia sp. trees. It has a very slow metabolism and the lowest body temperature of any mammal. It allows algae to grow in its fur, which imparts a greenish hue. Along with its inactivity, this makes it almost imperceptible to predators. It moves with great difficulty on the ground, but is a surprisingly good swimmer. Photographed on Bocas Del Toro Island, Panama.
