Cape pangolin. Cape pangolin (Manis temminckii) walking on sand. This scaly mammal lives in arid sandy areas. It feeds on ants and termites which it catches using its long sticky tongue. If disturbed, the pangolin protects itself by curling up into a ball and raising its sharp scales. It is mostly nocturnal and lives in parts of eastern and southern Africa. Photographed in Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, South Africa.
