Golden-mantled ground squirrel. View of a golden- mantled ground squirrel (Spermophilus lateralis) eating. These squirrels are distributed from southwestern Canada to the southern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in the USA. They live in mountainous woodland areas. They live in colonies but can also be solitary. These squirrels hibernate between October-November and March- April. They eat seeds, fruit, insects and even birds' eggs. These squirrels show little fear of humans when they are not disturbed. Photographed in Colorado, USA.
