Caption

Giant kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ingens). This rodent is found along the western side of the San Joaquin Valley in California, USA. It lives in a shallow burrow system which may cover an underground area of 35 square metres. The giant kangaroo rat is active at night, feeding on grass seeds which it stores in small, shallow holes and outside the entrance to its burrow. It is an endangered species, its numbers having dwindled due to the use of lethal pesticides and because of habitat loss through cultivation. Photographed in Carrizo Plains, California.
