Black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) standing alert on a rock. The prairie dog, also known as the prairie marmot, is a sociable animal, living in large underground colonies comprising several family groups. When a predator is seen, a prairie dog will raise an alarm call, alerting its neighbours. The prairie dogs that hear the cry quickly return to their burrows for protection. The prairie dog inhabits plains and grassland from Canada to Mexico, eating grasses and other low plants.
