Alpine marmot sunning itself on a rock. The alpine marmot (Marmota marmota) is a highly social ground-dwelling rodent that inhabits mountainous areas of Europe at heights between 800 and 3,200 metres. It feeds on young plants, grasses, herbs and grains, along with insects, spiders and worms. Photographed in Mercantour National Park, France.
