Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) sitting in snow. The red squirrel is widely distributed throughout Europe. The coat of the red squirrel varies from black to red depending on time of year and location. Red squirrels eat mostly the seeds of trees, neatly stripping conifer cones to get at the seeds within. Fungi, bird eggs, berries and young shoots are also eaten. Photographed in Finland, in February.
