Jonah and the whale. Engraving of the Biblical prophet Jonah being released by a whale. Jonah is said to have lived about 2700 years ago. The Bible tells of how Jonah was swallowed by a "great fish" after he was thrown overboard from a ship whose crew blamed him for causing a storm by displeasing God. Jonah prays to God from within the belly of the whale and is eventually vomited out onto land. He becomes a religious missionary and converts much of the populace of the city of Nineveh in modern Iraq. There have been other reports of mariners being swallowed by whales and surviving. Illustration taken from an 18th century book.
