Caption

Killer whale, or orca, (Orcinus orca) at the surface. The orca is an intelligent, social animal that lives in groups (pods) of up to 40 individuals. It is carnivorous, and feeds on a wide variety of animals, including fish, squid, birds and other marine mammals (such as seals and whales). It tends to hunt in a pack, sometimes displaying advanced strategies and forward planning. The orca is distributed throughout the world's seas, but seems to prefer cooler coastal waters. An adult male may reach up to nine metres in length. Despite its name it is not a whale, instead being a large dolphin. Photographed off Tysfjord, Norway.
