Humpback whale. Tail of a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) breaking the surface of the water. This whale is found throughout the world's oceans. It is a migrant, spending the winter in tropical waters, where it breeds and gives birth. For the rest of the year it inhabits colder waters, where it feeds on fish and plankton. It may reach a length of up to 15 metres, although the males are smaller than females. Photographed off Madagascar.
