European otter (Lutra lutra) on the bank of a pond. European otters are found in parts of Asia and Africa as well as across Europe. They inhabit freshwater and feed on fish, birds, insects, frogs, crustaceans and small mammals. They hunt mostly at night and spend the day in their 'holt', a burrow in the riverbank which is entered from underwater. Photographed in Surrey, UK, in August.
