Brown bear. View of a brown bear (Ursus arctos) carrying a salmon at a river's edge. A fully grown brown bear has a body length of 2-3 metres and a body weight of up to 780 kg. They are basically vegetarian in nature, but will eat meat if necessary. They are extremely skilful at fishing for salmon. Brown bears are usually solitary animals. They spend the winter in a den in a state of half-sleep at normal body temperature. The bear can therefore leave the den if it feels threatened. The brown bear is found in much of Eurasia and North America. Photographed in the McNeil River, Alaska, USA.
