Polar bear cub. View of a polar bear (Ursus maritimus) cub resting on ice. Polar bear cubs are only about 1 kg when they are born, their eyes remain closed for about 40 days. The cubs are nursed for about 18 months in total. A fully grown polar bear can weigh up to 700 kg and have a body length of up to 2.5 metres. Polar bears are large carnivores which inhabit the ice floes and coastal waters of the Arctic region. They are solitary animals, meeting only to mate. They mainly eat seals and fish, and are excellent swimmers. Photographed at Cape Churchill, Hudson Bay, Manitoba, Canada.
