Polar bear. View of a polar bear (Ursus maritimus) walking on ice. Polar bears are large carnivores which inhabit the ice floes and coastal waters of the Arctic. They are solitary animals for most of the year, meeting only to mate. They eat seals and fish, and are excellent swimmers. Polar bears wander between ice floes. They may be the largest land carnivore, with some bears weighing over 700 kilograms. Photographed in Hudson Bay, Canada.
