Polar bear. View of a polar bear (Ursus maritimus) walking across ice. Polar bears are large carnivores which inhabit the ice floes and coastal waters of the Arctic region. They are solitary animals, meeting only to mate. They mainly eat seals and fish, and are excellent swimmers. Polar bears wander between ice floes. They may be the largest land carnivore, with some specimens weighing over 700 kilogrammes.
