Polar bear. Head of a polar bear (Ursus maritimus). Polar bears are large carnivores which roam the ice floes and coastal waters of the Arctic region. They are solitary animals, meeting only to mate. Polar bears mainly eat seals and fish, and are excellent swimmers. They may be the largest land carnivore, as some bears weigh over 700 kilograms.
