Polar bear. Polar bear (Ursus maritimus) swimming underwater. It is an excellent swimmer and often catches fish as well as seals, its main prey. The polar bear inhabits the ice floes and coastal waters of the Arctic region. It is a solitary animal, meeting only to mate. It may be the largest land carnivore, with some specimens weighing over 700 kilograms.
