Spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) carrying the body of a dead hyena. This is the largest and most powerful of all the hyenas. It lives alone or in family groups, feeding on the carcasses of large herbivores or hunting live prey in packs. It does not practise cannibalism unless starving, but males competing for females or rival groups in conflict over prey can inflict serious injury on each other. These encounters can result in death. C. crocuta is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, in savannah and open grassland.
