Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) running over grassland. These are the largest and most powerful of all the hyenas. Although they are generally nocturnal, they can be seen moving around during the day, often in family groups or hunting packs. Whilst renowned for their scavenging abilities, they also hunt prey cooperatively and will seize young animals as soon as they are born. Widespread over the plains of southern and eastern Africa, the adults can weigh up to 80 kilograms. Photographed in the Etosha National Park, Namibia.
